Exterior Concrete Preparation

SURFACE CONDITION
For best project results, the concrete should be in sound physical condition, free of extensive cracking, pitting and spalling. The surface must also be dry and clean and free of dust, dirt, efflorescence, oil, chemicals, pevious flaking coatings and other contaminants which may block effective long-term adhesion.

REPAIRS
For best visual results and long-term performance, cracks, holes and significant surface pitting should be filled with a cement patch material and allowed to cure as directed before proceeding.

EXPANSION JOINTS
Expansion joints in the concrete slab serve an important purpose, guarding against cracking in the slab due to movement — and should NOT be filled. If covering the expansion joints is still preferred, joints should first be treated with ElastoLock Exterior Membrane and Elastolock seam mesh to minimize the chance of any cracking in the finish later due to slab movement.

SMOOTH SURFACES
Very smooth or "power troweled concrete" lacks optimal surface profile for most effective bond. In such cases, etching the concrete is recommended to ensure good penetration and "grab" of the coating. Etching will also remove efflorescence from the surface. If etching is required, see the surface preparation section for instructions on etching.

WASHING THE SURFACE
Removing all dirt, debris and other contaminants is key for ensuring long term beauty and performance. For easiest and best results cleaning with a pressure washer is highly recommended.

MASKING / DROP SHEET USE
Protect adjoining walls and other objects prior to starting work.

Good surface preparation is easy if performed with attention to a few key details. For best results, follow written product instructions. For detailed preparation information, a visit to the surface preparation section is also recommended.

RollerRock® Exterior Application

RollerRock is a three-step primerless application that will allow you to add a clean looking, uniformly textured, slip-resistant finish to practically any exterior concrete surface. It's water repellent, stands up to all climate extremes and is easy to apply by roller with no special techniques required.

STEP ONE: Cut in along edges with a 4" paint brush and then roll on a uniform coat of RollerRock in 4 x 4 ft. sections using the "Stone Texture Roller" with medium downward pressure. The stone texture roller creates a more textured surface with excellent slip-resistant properties ideal for exterior conditions. Patchiness or minor imperfections in the finish will disappear when the second coat is applied. Allow several hours between coats. Test the surface before walking on it.

STEP TWO: Roll on a second coat using the same roller in a perpendicular direction (if possible). This will fill imperfections from the first application and make the surface look uniformly attractive. Let the coating cure fully until the following day (24 hours) or longer in cool or very humid conditions.

STEP THREE: After the RollerRock has cured for 24 hours, apply a top coat of Daich Satin Sealer or Ultra Clear Coat for final durability, salt, stain and chemical resistance.

Where slightly less texture and a more uniform "softer" effect is desired, RollerRock can also be applied with the "Tile Texture Roller."

*** OPTIONAL GROUT LINE & MORTAR JOINT EFFECTS: If a tile or flagstone effect is desired, a uniform coat of Daich Textured Primer must be applied first in your desired "grout line / mortar joint" colour. When Primer is dry, lay down a pattern as desired onto the dry primer using Daich Grout Line or Flagstone Stencil Tape. Brush some textured primer over the tape to lock it down before RollerRock application as detailed above. (Leave the ends of the stencil tape free so you can pull it up later.) After RollerRock has cured for 24 hours, PEEL UP THE STENCIL TAPE to reveal the pattern and sweep up any debris before application of sealer/clear coat.

Terrazzo™ Exterior Concrete Application

Terrazzo™ is an easy two-step application that quickly adds beauty and decorative functionality to concrete surfaces — indoors and out. With your exterior concrete surface prepared as directed, proceed with the following application steps.

STEP ONE: Cut in along edges with a 4" paint brush and then roll on a uniform coat of Terrazzo in 4 x 4 ft. sections as you progress using the specially recommended "Terrazzo Roller." As you go, run the roller lightly over the wet material several times to "massage" the texture. Continue in the same manner until the surface is completely covered. Patchiness or minor imperfections in the finish will be concealed when the second coat is applied. Allow several hours between coats. Test the surface before walking on it.

STEP TWO: Roll on a second coat with the same roller in a perpendicular direction (if possible). This will fill imperfections from the first application and make the surface look uniformly attractive. Let the surface cure fully until the following day (24 hours) or longer in cool or very humid conditions.

Sealer: Terrazzo generally does not require a top-coat of sealer for most exterior applications. However, if even greater protection is desired for surfaces which will be subject to more demanding use or salting, Daich Satin Sealer or Ultra Clear Coat are recommended.

For Garage Floor applications, a uniform top coat of DaiHard® Epoxy Clear Coat is required for optimal long term durability, salt, stain and chemical resistance.

SpreadRock® Exterior Application

SpreadRock® delivers the timeless look of speckled granite. It adds a rock hard stone shell to all kinds of concrete floor and wall surfaces. SpreadRock glides on easily with a rounded pool trowel and covers many imperfections, leaving an elegant surface that can last for many years.

STEP ONE: Roll on a uniform coat of Daich Textured Primer which will grab onto the concrete and serve as an ideal bonding surface for the SpreadRock finish. After the Textured Primer has dried for 1 - 2 hours (longer in cool or humid conditions) — SpreadRock can be applied.

STEP TWO: Trowel on two very thin uniform coats of SpreadRock three to four hours apart. The first coat will have some imperfections and show-though of the underlying primer. For the second coat, stir in one cup of water per gallon of SpreadRock with a drill mixer. The added water will "lubricate" the stone mixture, allowing the second coat to flow easily for greater coverage. Final coverage rate of the product with two coats should be approximately 30 sq.ft. Let the surface cure fully until the following day (24 hours) or longer in cool or very humid conditions.

STEP THREE: Twenty four hours after application of SpreadRock (longer in cool or very humid conditions) two coats of sealer are applied several hours apart. For exterior surfaces, Daich Satin Sealer or Ultra Clear Coat are specifically recommended to keep out dirt and stains, guard against water and salt and keep the surface looking like new.

*** OPTIONAL GROUT LINE & MORTAR JOINT EFFECTS: If a tile or flagstone effect is desired, a uniform coat of Daich Textured Primer must be applied first in your desired "grout line / mortar joint" colour. SpreadStone Application by Roller

SpreadStone (by roller) is a three-part application that you can apply as a seamless finish or with a "grout" line pattern to make the surface look like stone tile or flagstone. SpreadStone takes a little bit more work — but the decorative effects can be quite spectacular and unique.

STEP ONE: Roll on a uniform coat of Daich Textured Primer which will grab onto the concrete and serve as an ideal bonding surface for the SpreadStone finish. After the Textured Primer has dried for 1 - 2 hours (longer in cool or humid conditions) — SpreadStone can be applied.

STEP TWO: Using a 1/2" paint roller, apply a uniform coat of SpreadStone Floor Coating (at a coverage rate of about 60 sq.ft. per gallon or about 1/16" - 1/8" wet thickness) over the dry primer. If you wish, lightly roll over the wet SpreadStone texture with a dry foam roller to soften any peaks of the texture before it dries. Continue until the surface is covered. Allow it to dry for 2 - 4 hours, or until it will support your weight.

Decorative Highlight Coat: Use the Daich Faux Texture Roller roller to apply the corresponding highlight colour over the dry base coat. This process is fast and easy. Use medium roller pressure, to leave a uniform "dappled" finish. Apply in a uniform "X" pattern. See the full method here. (Let everything cure for 24 hours.)

Sanding: (If stencil tape was used, peel it up before sanding.) Use a pole sander — or a floor buffer for larger commercial areas — loaded with 60 grit sandpaper to soften texture IF DESIRED, then vacuum ALL sanding dust.

STEP THREE: Apply a top coat of Daich Satin Sealer or Ultra Clear Coat for final durability, salt, stain and chemical resistance.

Brush some textured primer over the tape to lock it down before SpreadStone application as detailed above. (Leave the ends of the stencil tape free so you can pull it up later.) After SpreadStone has cured for 24 hours, PEEL UP THE STENCIL TAPE to reveal the pattern and sweep up any debris before application of sealer/clear coat.
