Foundation Wall Meta

Exterior Concrete Preparation

SURFACE CONDITION
For best project results, the concrete should be in sound physical condition, free of extensive cracking, pitting and spalling. The surface must also be dry and clean and free of dust, dirt, efflorescence, oil, chemicals, pevious flaking coatings and other contaminants which may block effective long-term adhesion.

REPAIRS
For best visual results and long-term performance, larger cracks, holes and significant surface pitting should be filled with a cement patch material and allowed to cure as directed before proceeding. Thinner cracks can be plugged and sealed with an application of Daich ElastoLock Rubber Membrane or Rubber Spackle. Hairline cracks do not require treatment and can be covered normally with your desired Daich Decorative finish product.

EXISTING COVERINGS: PARGING / STUCCO
If the surface of the wall is covered with a cementious coating like parging or stucco and it is sound, the surface only needs to be cleaned (see below). However, if parging or stucco is cracked or falling away, it will be necessary to remove any loose material and skim coat resulting voids with a cement patch product to make the surface uniform. Decorative finishing with your desired Daich product can begin after patch material has cured fully as directed.

EXPANSION JOINTS
Expansion joints in the concrete slab serve an important purpose, guarding against cracking in the slab due to movement — and should NOT be filled. If covering the expansion joints is still preferred, joints should first be treated with ElastoLock Exterior Membrane and Elastolock seam mesh to minimize the chance of any cracking in the finish later due to movement.

WASHING THE SURFACE
Removing all dirt, debris and other contaminants is key for ensuring long term beauty and performance. For easiest and best results cleaning with a pressure washer is highly recommended. When washing, be sure not to kick up dirt from the ground at the bottom of the wall and make the wall dirty.

MASKING / DROP SHEET USE
Protect adjoining walls and other objects prior to starting work.

Good surface preparation is easy if performed with attention to a few key details. For best results, follow written product instructions. For detailed preparation information, a visit to the surface preparation section is also recommended.

RollerRock® Foundation & Retaining Walls

RollerRock™ adds an elegant, organic stone finish to foundation walls, retaining walls — and many other vertical surfaces. It's easy-to-apply thicker finish, stand up to weather extremes, abrasion and impact.

Application is fast, completed in just a few quick drying coats.

STEP ONE: Cut in along edges with a 4" paint brush and then roll on a uniform coat of RollerRock in 4 x 4 ft. sections using the "Stone Texture Roller" with medium downward pressure. The stone texture roller creates a more textured surface with excellent slip-resistant properties ideal for exterior conditions. Patchiness or minor imperfections in the finish will disappear when the second coat is applied. Allow several hours between coats.

STEP TWO: Roll on a second coat using the same roller in a perpendicular direction (if possible). This will fill imperfections from the first application and make the surface look uniformly attractive. Let the coating cure fully until the following day (24 hours) or longer in cool or very humid conditions.

STEP THREE: Apply a top coat of Daich Satin Sealer or Ultra Clear Coat for final durability, dirt, salt and stain resistance.

Where slightly less texture and a more uniform "softer" effect is desired, RollerRock can also be applied with the "Tile Texture Roller." See the tile texture roller method on the RollerRock® product page.

*** OPTIONAL GROUT LINE & MORTAR JOINT EFFECTS: If a tile or flagstone effect is desired, a uniform coat of Daich Textured Primer must be applied first in your desired "grout line / mortar joint" colour. When Primer is dry, lay down a pattern as desired onto the dry primer using Daich Grout Line or Flagstone Stencil Tape. Brush some textured primer over the tape to lock it down before RollerRock application as detailed above. (Leave the ends of the stencil tape free so you can pull it up later.) After RollerRock has cured for 24 hours, PEEL UP THE STENCIL TAPE to reveal the pattern and sweep up any debris before application of sealer/clear coat.

Terrazzo™ Foundation & Retaining Walls

Terrazzo™ is a fast and easy way to add colour and visual interest to any foundation or retaining wall. Terrazzo's durability, water repellency and resistance to dirt and all climate extremes will deliver excellent long term results.

Best of all, it's fast, easy and economical — requiring no primer or sealer. Just two quick coats and the job is done.

STEP ONE: Cut in along edges with a 4" paint brush and then roll on a uniform coat of Terrazzo in 4 x 4 ft. sections as you progress using the specially recommended "Terrazzo Roller." As you go, run the roller lightly over the wet material several times to "massage" the texture. Continue in the same manner until the surface is completely covered. Patchiness or minor imperfections in the finish will be concealed when the second coat is applied.

STEP TWO: Roll on a second coat with the same roller in a perpendicular direction (if possible). This will fill imperfections from the first application and make the surface look uniformly attractive.

Sealer: Terrazzo generally does not require a top-coat of sealer for most exterior applications. However, if even greater protection is desired for surfaces which will be subject to more demanding use, abuse or salt spray, Daich Satin Sealer or Ultra Clear Coat are recommended.

SpreadRock® Foundation & Retaining Walls

SpreadRock® adds an elegant speckled granite stone finish to foundation walls, retaining walls — and all kinds of other vertical surfaces. Made of real stone, the layer is also incredibly tough, able to stand up to weather extremes, abrasion and impact.

STEP ONE: Roll on a uniform coat of Daich Textured Primer which will grab onto the concrete and serve as an ideal bonding surface for the SpreadRock finish. After the Textured Primer has dried for 1 - 2 hours (longer in cool or humid conditions) — SpreadRock can be applied.

STEP TWO: Trowel on two very thin uniform coats of SpreadRock three to four hours apart. If desired, a large scraper or drywall spatula can be used instead. Pull material upward, to keep product from falling to the ground and being wasted during application. Press the stone mixture firmly against the wall as you go to achieve a uniform layer that conforms tightly to the wall. The first coat will have some imperfections and show-though of the underlying primer. For the second coat, stir in one cup of water per gallon of SpreadRock with a drill mixer. The added water will "lubricate" the stone mixture, allowing the second coat to flow easily for greater coverage. Install in the same manner as the first coat. Final coverage rate of the product with two coats should be approximately 30 sq.ft. Let the surface cure fully until the following day (24 hours) or longer in cool or very humid conditions.

STEP THREE: Twenty four hours after application of SpreadRock (longer in cool or very humid conditions) two coats of sealer are applied several hours apart. For exterior surfaces, Daich Satin Sealer or Ultra Clear Coat are specifically recommended to keep out dirt and stains, guard against water and salt and keep the surface looking like new.

*** OPTIONAL GROUT LINE & MORTAR JOINT EFFECTS: If a tile or flagstone effect is desired, a uniform coat of Daich Textured Primer must be applied first in your desired "grout line / mortar joint" colour. SpreadStone™ Foundation & Retaining Walls

SpreadStone™ adds an elegant, organic stone finish to foundation walls, retaining walls — and many other vertical surfaces. It's rich, incredibly tough, able to stand up to weather extremes, abrasion and impact.

STEP ONE: Roll on a uniform coat of Daich Textured Primer which will grab onto the concrete and serve as an ideal bonding surface for the SpreadStone finish. After the Textured Primer has dried for 1 - 2 hours (longer in cool or humid conditions) — SpreadStone can be applied.

STEP TWO: Using a 1/2" paint roller, apply a uniform coat of SpreadStone Floor Coating (at a coverage rate of about 60 sq.ft. per gallon) over the dry primer. If you wish, lightly roll over the wet SpreadStone texture with a dry foam roller to soften any peaks of the texture before it dries. Continue until the surface is covered. Allow it to dry for 1 - 2 hours.

Decorative Highlight Coat: Use the Daich Faux Texture Roller roller to apply the corresponding highlight colour over the dry base coat. This process is fast and easy. Use medium roller pressure, to leave a softly highlighted "tone-on-tone" finish. Apply in a uniform "X" pattern. See the full method here. (Let everything cure for 24 hours.)

Sanding (optional for walls): (If stencil tape was used, peel it up before sanding.) Use a pole sander loaded with 60 grit sandpaper to soften texture as desired, then vacuum or sweep off ALL sanding dust. (Wear a dust mask to avoid breathing sanding dust).

STEP THREE: Apply a top coat of Daich Satin Sealer or Ultra Clear Coat for final durability dirt resistance and easy cleanability.

Brush some textured primer over the tape to lock it down before SpreadStone application as detailed above. (Leave the ends of the stencil tape free so you can pull it up later.) After SpreadStone has cured for 24 hours, PEEL UP THE STENCIL TAPE to reveal the pattern and sweep up any debris before application of sealer/clear coat.
