Wood Deck Preparation

SURFACE CONDITION
For best project results, the wood should be in sound physical condition, free of extensive cracking, checking and mill glaze. The surface must also be dry and clean. Pressure Treated wood should be aged at least six months to allow for dissipation of moisture and tannins from the wood. Plywood should be good one side and at least 5/16" thick on 16" joists.

REPAIRS
For best visual results and long-term performance, cracks, holes and significant surface pitting should be filled with Daich ElastoLock® Rubber Spackle and allowed to cure as directed before proceeding.

SMOOTH SURFACES
Very smooth, mill-glazed wood needs to be scuffed to create some bonding tooth and opportunity for penetration into the wood fibers.

WASHING THE SURFACE
Use Daich Coatings Ultra Prep Wood Cleaner to scrub the deck boards and remove dead wood fibers and dirt. Follow with pressure washing to remove all washing related residues. Use a washer with a fan spray and no more than about 1500 p.s.i or pressure. Keep fan spray 4" to 6" away from the wood to avoid lifting wood fibers.

If applying to plywood, washing with water is not recommended. The surface should be well scuffed with 80 grit sandpaper and then vacuumed of all sanding dust.

ELASTOLOCK FOR PRESSURE TREATED DECKS
Coat the tops, cut edges and between the boards with Daich ElastoLock as a first protective, high adhesion bonding coat, before proceding with RollerRock.

ELASTOLOCK / REINFORCING FABRIC PLYWOOD DECKS
Plywood surfaces must be treated with a protective waterproof combination of ElastoLock Rubber and Reinforcing Fabric/Mesh to completely isolate the deck fromwater. See the detailed installation video for plywood decks on the Elastolock page.

Good surface preparation is easy if performed with attention to a few key details. For best results, follow written product instructions. For detailed preparation information, a visit to the surface preparation section is also recommended.

PROCEED WITH APPLICATION OF YOUR DESIRED FINISH ONLY WHEN PREPARATION STEPS ABOVE HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.

RollerRock™ Deck & Dock Application

RollerRock Deck and Dock is an easy two-step application that quickly adds beauty and decorative functionality to pressure treated and plywood decks.

STEP ONE: Cut in along edges with a 4" paint brush and then roll on a uniform coat of RollerRock Deck and Dock in 4 x 4 ft. sections as you progress using the supplied 1/2" roller As you go, run the roller lightly over the wet material several times to "massage" the texture. If applying to pressure treated boards, brush RollerRock between the boards as you go, to provide drip-dry waterproofing for the sides of the boards.

Continue in the same manner until the surface is completely covered. Patchiness or minor imperfections in the finish will be concealed when the second coat is applied. Coverage area per gallon per coat should be approximately 160 sq.ft. Allow several hours between coats. Test the surface before walking on it.

STEP TWO: Brush and roll on a second coat in the same manner as step one. This will fill imperfections from the first application and make the surface look uniformly attractive. Let the surface cure fully until the following day (24 hours) or longer in cool or very humid conditions.

Sealer: RollerRock Deck and Dock generally does not require a top-coat of sealer for most exterior applications. However, if even greater protection is desired for surfaces which will be subject to more demanding use or salting, Daich Satin Sealer or Ultra Clear Coat are recommended.
